Meymaneh kilim – 250 X 176
Meymaneh kilims are flat-woven rugs from the Meymaneh region in northern Afghanistan, known for their geometric, tribal patterns and earthy colors. Made using a flatweaving technique, these kilims have no pile, making them lighter and more durable than knotted rugs. Common motifs include diamonds, zigzags, and triangles, often in vibrant reds, blues, and browns, achieved with natural dyes.
Woven from wool (often handspun), they come in various sizes and are perfect for use as rugs, wall hangings, or throws. While thinner than traditional rugs, their flatweave makes them easy to maintain and suitable for high-traffic areas.
Meymaneh kilims reflect the tribal heritage of the region, with designs passed down through generations. Durable and functional, they continue to be highly valued for their craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal.
This piece is unique for its black color because black dye is rarely used in traditional Meymaneh kilims, as these rugs are typically characterized by their warm, earthy tones such as reds, blues, greens, and browns. However, when black does appear in Meymaneh kilims, it is often used sparingly to highlight specific patterns, borders, or as an accent color within a design.
The black is typically derived from natural dyes, such as oak or walnut bark, which are used to achieve a deep, rich black. It may be incorporated into geometric shapes, outlining motifs, or as a contrast to other vibrant colors in the design. While not a dominant color, its use can add depth and definition to the overall composition of the kilim.
