Soumak (Sumak) – 150 X 100
A Soumak kilim (or Sumak kilim) is a type of traditional flatwoven textile, but it differs from a standard kilim in the weaving technique used to create the design. While kilims are flatwoven using the standard “over-under” technique, this creates a 3D effect, giving Soumak kilims a more pronounced design and a unique tactile quality. Soumak kilims are woven with a distinctive process that adds a raised, textured effect to the surface, making them more intricate and dimensional.
Soumak kilims are woven by various nomadic groups, and one of the key groups known for producing these textiles are the Mogan nomads. These nomads primarily come from the Mogan Plain, a region that spans parts of northwestern Iran, particularly around the area of Mogan in the Azerbaijan province.
Soumak kilims often feature geometric patterns and floral motifs, which can include intricate shapes, medallions, and borders. Symmetry is a common characteristic of Soumak kilims, and the designs are typically balanced, with motifs arranged in repeating sequences. This piece is made out of wool. The colors are often vibrant and rich. Common colors include reds, blues, greens, yellows, and earthy tones, depending on the region. This Sumak is one of a kind, motif is called Muḥarramāt. There is only one in the world like this.
Because of the technique used to make Soumak kilims, they tend to be more durable and substantial than regular kilims, making them suitable for use as rugs, wall hangings, or decorative textiles. Soumak kilims are highly valued for their aesthetic beauty and cultural significance. They are often woven by skilled artisans and are seen as a symbol of craftsmanship in the regions where they are made.
